What does Jain food exclude?
Jain food is lacto-vegetarian food that leaves out meat, fish, eggs, alcohol and honey, and, for strict Jains, root vegetables such as onion, garlic and potato, because the diet aims to avoid harming even tiny living things.
That is the short answer to “what is Jain food?” The longer answer is a list, and it helps to keep it handy when you read a menu.
Left out
- Meat, fish and eggs
- Alcohol and honey
- Onion, garlic, potato and other roots and tubers (for strict Jains)
- For many families, any meal after sunset. This is called chauvihar, which means not eating once the sun has set.
Part of the diet
- Milk, curd and ghee
- Grains and dals
- Most vegetables that grow above the ground, and fruit
So what foods do Jain people eat? Dal, rice, rotis, sabzis made from above-ground vegetables, and plenty of dairy. Practice varies from home to home: some Jain families follow every rule every day, others relax the root rule outside festival periods. Ginger is a root too, so many Jains avoid fresh ginger; if it matters to you, mention it when you order.
Sattvic sounds similar, but it isn’t the same.
Is sattvic food the same as Jain food?
No: sattvic food leaves out onion and garlic, but it can include potatoes and other root vegetables, so a sattvic dish isn’t always Jain. Sattvic means “pure”, and it describes yogic-style food that is fresh, light and simply cooked.
Many people search “is Satvik food without onion and garlic?” and the answer is yes. A sattvic diet leaves out meat, alcohol, onion and garlic, along with processed and deep-fried food. It includes legumes, vegetables, nuts, seeds, fresh fruit and dairy.
The difference shows up in one place: the root vegetables. A sattvic aloo sabzi is fine for a sattvic eater and off-limits for a strict Jain. Here are the three rule sets side by side.
| Jain | Sattvic | Navratri fast | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Onion and garlic | Left out | Left out | Left out |
| Potato and other roots | Left out by strict Jains | Can be included | Depends on the family |
| Honey | Left out | Depends on the family | Depends on the family |
| Dairy | Included | Included | Depends on the family |
| Eggs | Left out | Left out | Left out |
| Grains (rice, wheat) | Included | Included | Wheat flour and rice flour left out |
| Eating after sunset | Many avoid it (chauvihar) | Depends on the family | Depends on the family |
Restaurants sometimes use “sattvic” loosely, so if it matters, ask whether the dish has onion or garlic, whoever’s menu it is.
Fast days change the rules again.
What changes on fast days: Navratri, Ekadashi and Paryushana?
On Navratri fast days, many families also give up wheat and rice flour, not just onion and garlic, and in 2026, Sharada Navratri runs from 11 to 19 October. Ekadashi and Paryushana each bring their own list, and the lists don’t always agree.
Navratri
A vrat (a fast) during Navratri can take several forms: a water fast, a fruit-only fast, or one meal a day. Navratri food for most fasting families leaves out meat, eggs, alcohol, onion and garlic, plus wheat flour, rice flour and canned food. If you’re looking for a vrat thali, this is the set of rules the kitchen needs to follow.
Ekadashi
Ekadashi is the 11th day of each lunar fortnight, so it comes around about 24 times a year. Ekadashi food leaves out grains and legumes. In one common way of fasting, sabudana (sago), singhada (water chestnut), shakarkand (sweet potato), potatoes and groundnuts are all allowed.
Paryushana (Jain)
Paryushana is a Jain observance. During it, strict Jains also give up green leafy vegetables, on top of the usual Jain rules.
Where the fasting food rules clash
Potato is fine for many people on Ekadashi, but a strict Jain won’t eat it. If you’re hosting both, plan for both.
Knowing the rules is half of it; ordering is the other half.
How do you order Jain food safely at a restaurant?
The safest way to order Jain food is to say “Jain” out loud and ask about the base of the dish, because many gravies start with onion, garlic or ginger before anything else goes in. “No onion” on its own can still leave garlic in the tadka or potato in the filling.
- Say “Jain” when you order. Don’t only say “no onion”. The word Jain tells the kitchen to leave out garlic and roots as well.
- Ask about the gravy or tadka base. Ask whether it’s made fresh for your dish or taken from a ready onion-tomato base.
- Ask about potato in fillings. Samosas, masala dosa and pav bhaji often carry potato.
- Ask whether the chutney has garlic. Many red and green chutneys do.
- Tell the restaurant when you reserve if you’re a group. A kitchen can plan a Jain spread far better with notice than at the table.
- Name the fast on fast days. Navratri and Ekadashi have different rules, so saying “Navratri fast” or “Ekadashi” gets you the right food.
With the script ready, here’s where to try it.
